Automatic Identification Systems, or AIS, are electronic transponders that are placed on ships or boats that identify it by name, position, type, & call sign. The signal is VHF that is continuously sent out over the course of the vessel's travels.

VHF signals are often received by other ships as it transmits data about the course and speed of the transponding vessel. Received VHF signals then provide a visual display of all AIS-transmitting ships that are within a certain range. The AIS system therefore provides a highly valuable service to water vessels in helping to track the progress of other watercraft in the nearby area. This decreases the chances of collision on the waterways. . The information that is received by other AIS-enabled boats is primarily available on a personal computer display screen or placed as an overlay on a chartplotter. This helps to verify radar readout.

Navigators and crew members who are on-watch depend on it to make important waterway navigation decisions in terms of course and speed. AIS also is a valuable tool to help search and rescue operations. The device can pinpoint the exact position of a ship in trouble regardless of weather conditions.

Avoiding collisions by AIS programming of specific vessels is information that is exchanged automatically by the systems allowing for safer navigation. The International Maritime Organization requires AIS on all passenger and large shipping vessels (over 300 ton) to use the AIS system. AIS is not required for recreational boats but it is increasingly becoming more popular. All over the world, AIS is thought to be used in over 40,000 vessels.

The primary use of AIS technology is to avoid collisions. AIS does not work alone. VHF radio communications can be limited and considering the fact that every vessel isn't required to AIS, it is not the perfect solution. It is not an automated collision avoidance system as defined by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). In the hands of a skilled captain however, AIS is one of many tools utilized for safe travel.

Sea captains often need help identifying other vessels in a local area in order to make the best decisions on course. That likewise does not mean that all additional types of navigational observation is discarded. There is, of course, visual observation where the captain will often make use of binoculars to notice far away objects or boats. There is also audio observational alerts that a captain has to listen for such as sirens, whistles, or VHF radio. Finally, there is radar or Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) that can provide valuable navigational information to add to what the AIS is plotting. Despite having all this kind of technology, accidents can still happen. It is often because of time delays and limitations of radar or even just plain human error whenever this takes place. The graphical charts and all the other observational tools muct be utilized if water travel is to be safe and AIS is a small part of that.

Through the years AIS has proven to be one of the most significant improvements in navigation safety since the launching of radar, depth sounders and GPS. Required on board almost all commercial vessels and used by a significant number of smaller sea crafts since 2003, Automatic Identification Systems are now readily accessible for recreational boaters.

AIS is a coordinated navigation safety scheme developed primarily as a collision prevention apparatus enabling commercial vessels as well as other sea crafts to “see” each other electronically in all circumstances and enhance the navigator’s knowledge about the immediate surroundings. AIS data can be placed on top of radars and chart plotters, presenting a collective view and providing crucial safety information with the added capability of being able “see around corners,” in which radar may have restricted capacity.

The general concept in collision avoidance is being able to see and being seen. This is where AIS serves its ultimate purpose. For ships equipped with the system, AIS supplies vital data such as: vessel position, course, speed and navigational status (cruising, anchored), as well as the vessel’s name and type like sail, power, tug, ferry, et cetera. The system constantly communicates this data to all other AIS-capable crafts in range.

An AIS equipped vessel also picks up this information from other AIS-equipped posts, providing it to the skipper in more ways than one. The information can then be looked up on separate monitors that supply “text only” listings, or it can be automatically integrated with chart plotters, radar displays and computerized navigational software installed on a PC.

Even though AIS technology and the policies for its utilization are still developing, the system proves to be an important addition, not just on commercial vessels but also on various recreational boats. It’s virtually simple to install, and most importantly provides crucial navigation data. And, just like all other gadgets, you have to be familiar with it and use it judiciously to get the best performance out of it.

Class A AIS transmits the ship’s Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number together with other identities and vital information regarding the vessel. Specific navigational data are transmitted every two to 10 seconds when cruising, and every three minutes when anchored.

The preliminary transmission includes the vessel’s navigational standing, rate of turn expressed in degrees per minute, speed over ground in 1/10 resolution, latitude and longitude to 1/10,000 minute, course over ground within 1/10 degree, true heading, and the time the data was produced.

A second a data is also transmitted every after six minutes containing the craft’s name, MMSI number (a nine digit number bearing the ship station, earth station, coast station, coast earth station, and group calls), IMO number (a distinctive reference number associated with the ship’s construction), and radio call sign, together with information particular to the vessel’s physical features like dimensions and draft. It also relays ship’s type, its cargo, destination, and estimated arrival (month, day, hour and minute).

Class A automatic identification systems send the ship’s vital description in a very detailed fashion making it suitable for commercial purposes. It might come with a higher price with the different hardware and software needed, not to mention the cost for installation, but it also assures you some sort of assurance that you will be able to keep track of the ship’s whereabouts at all times with the help of an automatic identification system.

Ever since the introduction of Automatic Identification System (AIS), it has been promptly utilized as a vital safety feature primarily due to the fact that shipping channels have become busier than usual. Mainly employed for recognition and location of ships, AIS transmit information containing the MMSI number, position, course, and even speed of the vessel. At present, with the latest innovation in AIS transponders, proprietors of recreation boats and small crafts can use this safety equipment to their advantage.

The Class B AIS engines are very similar to its cousin, the Class A AIS engine. Nevertheless Class B transponders has a transmission rate of 1 per 30 seconds which is lesser compared to a Class A sending out at 1 per 10 seconds of interval. Moreover, Class B transponders do not put out the IMO number or the call sign of the craft it is fitted onto.

AIS signals are dispatched on top of two VHF frequencies in an alternate transmission mode. Several receivers will intercept both channels while some just one. Single channels will fail to spot certain information and receive transmissions less often.

Keeping clear of other vessels on the water is a very critical consideration in maritime transport. For small crafts, it is our greatest concern more than ever, to stay away from any other vessel, most specifically those large ships that regularly navigate the seas. Furthermore, it is imperative to take into account that bigger ships have inadequate maneuverability and stopping clearance.

Because of its transmission rate difference from the Class A AIS engine, Class B engines would be worthless for fast moving crafts such as a speedy ferryboat. You will only receive a ping twice per minute. At 20 knots a high speed ferry would have moved a considerable distance and in restricted visibility this could mean disaster. So if your boat doesn’t cruise that fast and you’re running out of budget, a Class B transponder will do fine for you.

AIS is a scheme that vessels utilize to link their exact location to other ships being part of the global maritime safety system. Since December of 2004, all vessels over 300 gross tons were mandated to be equipped with an AIS which transmits information regarding the ship to any properly equipped receiver.

AIS basically transmits short spurts of immediate data on two VHF channels in the marine frequency. These two frequencies are 161.975 (Marine ch 87) and 162.025 (ch 88) MHz respectively. Ships transmit their identity, position, course, speed and destination so as other vessels can monitor their movement thus, avoiding possible collision. With a VHF radio scanner set into either of the channels and a plotter-equipped computer unit, you can see a concurrent map of all the AIS capable ships and crafts in your immediate vicinity as well as information regarding their identity, position, course and speed.

It also aids navigation in cases like having poor visibility due to weather disturbances. When sailing through a storm visibility becomes a very big problem making your ship vulnerable to collision with other vessels. However, if the ship is duly equipped with an AIS system, it will be able to see all the AIS capable vessels surrounding it and at the same time the ship will also be seen on the radars of the other ships. It will also enable you to contact through VHF radio the surrounding vessels and them to contact you. In cases of emergency like your ship, for an instance, stalled in the middle of the sea, through the AIS system, your location will be very easy to track since your signal is also received by Vessel Traffic Services outposts.

With AIS, you are assured of a safe and enjoyable journey.

The Automatic Identification System or AIS, is a VHF-based ship recognition system that has been in use since 1999. It's a mandatory requirement for most ships of over three hundred gross tons cruising in international waters. The AIS system has proved to be a blessing for collision prevention between vessels and is also widely applied in aiding Vessel Traffic Services (VTS).

Very recent updates in AIS technology came up with the Virtual Automatic Identification System which utilizes the concept of Pseudo AIS messaging. PAIS is mainly an AIS content relayed by VTS stations to supply approaching vessels with a map that includes the specific location of virtual buoys (indicates channel margins), and crafts without AIS capabilities. The VTS center dispatches a PAIS message on behalf of the towing vessel to ships in the vicinity so that they can give the towing vessel a wide clearance.

PAIS innovation gave birth to Virtual Buoys and Pilots. A Virtual Buoy is still an AIS message sent by the VTS to ships in the harbor. It relays information regarding the location of buoys that are virtually plotted. Vessels equipped with AIS transponders can use this information to safely cruise through pegged lines and keep off obstacles. This technology renders favorable navigation as buoys are readily shown on AIS-linked radar monitors regardless of visibility or atmospheric conditions. A different application of Virtual AIS is that of the Virtual Pilot. In this system, the pilot base would broadcast a series of navigational way points to the ships concerned and the ships merely have to head for this way point. This will help ships to navigate successfully in waters without the active presence of a pilot on board.

Automatic Identification Systems paired with a unified Bridge System will assist the Pilot base to take in the latest data pertaining to all the navigational parameters of the ship thus, helping it to safely direct the ship to its lane. Although legal complications of Virtual Pilot still remains subject for debate, price benefits to ship owners in terms of pilot costs and ROIs, will, in all probability, guarantee that Virtual Pilots will likely turn into a very genuine proposition in the up-coming years.

Selecting the most appropriate marine electronics don’t just make your boating experience more fun and fishing more productive, but it can also be important to your well being as well as in cases of emergency. Choosing the right equipment is the first step and learning how to use it properly is an equally as important task. Meaning, you'll have to take time learning how to use the equipment in whatever way you find it more effective, be it from instructional videos, manuals, or having someone to personally show you how to use the item.

By all means, you should also know how to navigate in the event that your electronics start failing. Learning how to read charts and plotting your course is an ever important and required skill. Here are some tips to help you choose electronics that are just right for you.

1. The most important electronic navigational gadget that you shouldn’t miss to fit your boat with is an Automatic Identification System or AIS. It is used by individual sea crafts and by the Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) to find and identify boats. Your automatic identification system gear is the most important electronic navigational device you'll own. It allows boats to exchange electronic information including position, identification, course and even the speed at which you are cruising. The AIS transponder will cause your vessel to show up on computer screens at VTS stations. If ever you have an emergency, or should become lost, this will be very helpful.

2. Your electronics package should also have a GPS plotter with it as it is one of the important components. One popular option is a multifunction GPS/plotter, which puts multiple functions into one device. Multifunction displays can allow you to run radar, GPS and fish finder data on one screen at the same time. They are also relatively easy to expand for other functions and displays.

3. When choosing a display, remember that the larger it is, the better you will be able to see it. And keep in mind that on a boat, viewing conditions can be far from optimal due to sun glare, storms, and swells. If you can afford a 10 to 12 inch display, that's best, but you should definitely choose at least a 7 inch display.

4. Another good investment in the safety of your boat is a depth sounder or fishfinder. When the weather turns bad a depth sounder combined with your GPS can help find the way back safely to shore.

5. There is an ever changing selection of marine electronics products made available for the boating industry. Now there are laptop computers designed for marine use. These computers perform like standard laptops do, but they are also equipped with special softwares that allow multi-format charting, hsb2 electronics integration, and worldwide tides and currents among its many functions.

All in all, your AIS device, GPS plotter, and depth sounder are the most important pieces of marine electronics for your boat to be ensured of your safety and the safety of your passengers. Have these devises in place first, and if extra budget, there are plenty of peripherals you can add for entertainment equipment and fish finding devices that you can always have fun with.

Automatic Identification System or AIS as it is commonly known, is a VHF based ship identification scheme that has been used since the year 2000. It is a compulsory prerequisite for ships over 300GT bound for international voyages. The AIS system has been verified to be a advantage for collision avoidance amongst crafts and is as well extensively used in assisting Vessel Traffic Services (VTS).

Recent advancements in this equipment have marked the introduction of virtual AIS. Virtual AIS is founded over the model of Pseudo AIS messaging. Pseudo AIS is fundamentally an AIS message transmitted by means of VTS centers to provide ships with information about towing vessels and other such ships that do not have AIS equipment. The VTS centre puts out a pseudo AIS message on behalf of the towing craft, to ships in the area in order to provide the towing vessel a wide approach margin.

This idea of pseudo AIS has taken another step forward by initiating the employment of Virtual Buoys and Virtual Pilotage. Virtual Buoys are essentially AIS messages dispatched by the VTS or Port Authorities to sea crafts in the docks, giving out the information on navigational buoys that aren’t really present. Sea crafts that are en suited with AIS transponders can use this data to steer their way safely through tight channels and avoid hitches. This system is exceptionally lucrative because the fixed cost required with installing and maintaining a physical buoy is eliminated. It is also advantageous to navigation because the buoy will appear on AIS-linked radar screens regardless of the degree of visibility or weather conditions.

One excellent example of a successful Virtual Buoyage system is in the Hooghly River in India wherein the river banks keep changing because of silting. This makes the makes the maintenance of buoys very difficult since they have to be moved around very often to signify the demarcation lines of the bank’s new position. This impediment has been successfully surmounted with the help of a Virtual Buoy system to mark the channel.

Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an essential part of any marine vessel. It ensures the safety of the vessel, its crew, as well as other crafts roaming the seas. Before you get an AIS and install one, there are requirements that you need to consider first.

To get and make use of the signal, initially, you will need an AIS engine. An AIS engine is the heart of the whole system. This comes in two classes: Class A and Class B. Class A AIS engine are used in commercial shipping. It transmits through 2 channels and is almost always totally incorporated into the vessel’s navigation systems. A Class B AIS engines on the other hand are used in smaller vessels. With this contraption, you can either choose to just send or receive signal.

Other requirements you would need to comply to get a fully functional AIS, is a VHF antenna, a GPS signal, power and a display. You can choose to make use of your existing VHF antenna but you will definitely lose significant signal strength so it is advisable to get another antenna for the sole utilization of your AIS.

The AIS engine will then translate the signal before it appears on the display. There are many AIS engines available on the market. Equipment that can show the AIS signal includes, any PC and Mac based navigation system. Standalone AIS displays are also available in the market.

You could also choose to add a digital compass if you want to send your rate of turn, which will enable other vessels to project your location after your maneuver.

You will also need to register your MMSI number into the unit so it can be included in your signal. Entities receiving your signal, may it be another vessel or a Coast Guard shore station VTS can read your signal and be able to contact you by vessel name and/or call sign.

Steering clear of other vessels on water is a very crucial consideration in marine transportation. For smaller vessels, it is especially our best interest to avoid any other ship, not to mention the gigantic shipping vessels that constantly roam the oceans. It is also vital to remember that larger ships have restricted maneuverability and halting range thus, when you go into a collision course with one of these guys, you’re in for the ride of your life, so to speak. Having ready related reviews of the AIS I can say that it really does the job well.

Here are three instances that would reflect the importance of AIS:

1. You are in a channel and you have poor visibility, and then, worst comes to worse, the weather turns nasty carrying heavy rain and strong winds. When you are trapped in this situation, the ships that were once easily seen on deck are now invisible rendering you oblivious of the surrounding.

2. You are out on the wide ocean and a ship appears on the horizon. Let’s say that the watch is not looking and you have no wind and cannot start the engine which means you can’t evade the incoming vessel. This is a true-to-life scenario. In this case, your AIS signal would be picked up by the ship’s radar and with that, alarm can be signaled on the bridge.

3. AIS allows you to see around bends. Imagine a channel where you are coming up to a bend and there is a ship coming your way. You cannot see around the bend with your naked eye due to the raised shoreline, but with an AIS, you would be able to pick up the ship’s signal on your chart plotter.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) previously reported a mid-channel collision between a commercial Ferry and a small sailing vessel which resulted in the sailboat sinking and the loss of life. Investigation showed that the sailing vessel did not appear on the radar and because of the bridge’s height, the sailboat wasn’t seen. MAIB later recommended use of better radar reflectors so smaller vessels can be seen and also AIS use was mandated in all marine vessels.

AIS has been developed to help prevent collisions between commercial shipping vessels and it has, since then, been a legal requirement on ships. In US waters, it is required for all commercial maritime vessels.

Automatic Identification System or AIS is an identity scheme that transmits the vessel’s Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number which is the number uniquely assigned to a vessel. It is a nine-digit number that are digitally sent over a radio frequency channel to identify the vessels ship station, earth station, coast station, coast earth station, and group calls. These identities are structured in such a way that the whole identity or even a part of it can be used by telephone and telex subscribers connected to the general telecommunications network to call the ship automatically.

Vessels with the proper equipment can receive or send the AIS signal over a special VHF radio frequency. The signal can then be plotted on a standalone AIS unit or the existing navigation/radar displays. The display shows the AIS target as a long triangular symbol representing the vessel, large ships or even smaller fishing vessels. The triangle points in the direction that the target vessel is moving towards. This allows skippers to monitor the ocean traffic always and knowing what is around them at all times.

Electronics For Marine Navigation

Navigating on the open water away from land has always been challenging and very exciting. Boating can be a very rewarding experience provided your boat features the proper tools to provide the complete safety. Good quality marine navigation electronic equipment on board ensures faster and safer boating.

It is recommended to make sure that, the boat is equipped with certain marine electronics. The minimum requirement for safety is to at least have a VHF Marine Radio and a compass before leaving the shore. Other desirable electronic devices include a GPS plotter, fish finder or depth sounder, radar, and auto pilot. Other more sophisticated but nice to have items include an Automatic Identification System and a networked navigation system

Marine navigation electronics equipment operation and uses are discussed below:

Auto Pilot: It is a highly recommended tool for mariners set to go on a long voyage. Auto Pilot helps to steer the boat automatically and thus, relieves the person at the helm from fatigue. Auto Pilot is of great help for those that troll while fishing controlling the boat way automatically, allowing the captain to join and enjoy the fishing. This tool is very helpful, as it allows to save fuel by maintaining the boat on a steady heading.

Fish finder: Those who fish for pleasure or hire enjoy the help provided by a good fish finder. The fish finder operates using SONAR. In principle, the sonar works by sending a signal down trough the water column until it strikes and object with ample mass to return a signal to the devise, thus rendering an image on the screen. Thereby, showing the depth of the fish relative to bottom structure. If a fish finder is not desired then a depth sounder with a digital readout is a good option, being cheaper.

Automatic Identification System: It is considered an important electronic tool for marine navigation. It provides other boats with your vital information as well as their information to you such as the exact position of the boat, longitude and latitude, Time stamp, Rate of turn, Course over ground etc. While the boat is on its way, the AIS shows the above data every 2 to 10 seconds, whereas when the boat is anchored, the information is shown every 3 minutes. Apart from providing the above-mentioned information, it also provides information about other boats or ships concerning their dimension, location, and type of the boat or ship. It is the comprehensive electronic instrument for collision avoidance.

EPIRB: The Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) also known as distress radio beacon is a transmitter, which helps rescue services to locate boats in distress. The transmissions are rebroadcast from satellites around the world to the various rescue services. Watercraft operators wishing to have an EPIRB must use a digital 406MHz unit. The International Copas-Sarsat Satellite System stopped monitoring for all but 406MHz signals for distress alert and location data for rescue operation throughout the world..

GPS Plotter: The GPS system now takes over the duty of the old Loran navigation system. GPS signals are broadcast from satellites all over the world that are maintained by the US government. GPS can be read in digital or map format. The preferred method is on a plotter that is loaded with digital maps of the area you are boating in. Most new VHF radios now have the capability to broadcast your location with a distress signal if connected to a GPS

Automatic Identification System, AIS - The Best Navigation Aid to Boaters Since the GPS

One of the fastest and biggest growth areas in marine navigation is AIS. Having a AIS transmitter unit onboard, will turn your boat into a radio beacon continuously transmitting speed and course and your identity. Conversely having an AIS receiver allows you to track a ships, COG, SOG when in VHF range. This can be very important information for navigating in shipping lanes and channels.

What is AIS?

AIS stands for Automated Identity System. The identity is the transmitting vessels MMSI number, current speed and course which are just some of the information you can get. AIS has been developed to help prevent collisions between commercial shipping. AIS has been a legal requirement on ships over 300GT for a while. In US waters it is required by commercial ships over 65ft and tugs over 26ft and over 600 HP.

Vessels with the proper equipment can receive/send the AIS signal over a special VHF radio frequency. The signal includes COG, SOG, CPA, (CPA stands for closest point of approach), MMSI which can then be plotted on a standalone AIS unit or the existing navigation or radar displays. The display shows the AIS target as long triangle symbol depicting vessel and the same symbol is used for a large ship or small fishing vessel. The triangle points in the direction the target vessel is moving. This allows shipping to monitor traffic always knowing what is happening around them at all times.

What are the Benefits of AIS to the recreational boater

Avoiding other vessels on the water, and it is especially in our best interests to avoid the big guys whether in a shipping channel or not. Large ships have restricted maneuverability and stopping range. Having discussed AIS with maritime industry workers including ship Captains and Pilots, I can tell you they really like the system.

Here are three reasons for AIS. One, you are in poor visibility, and are in a channel and suddenly the weather comes in rain, & winds. Now the ships that were once easily seen on deck are now invisible. Two, you are out on the wide ocean when a ship appears on the horizon. The watch is not looking and you have no wind and cannot start the engine. This is a true scenario. In this case your AIS signal would be picked up by the ships radar. The signal would sound an alarm on the bridge. Third, AIS Allows you to see around bends. Imagine a channel where you are coming up to a bend and there is a ship coming your way. You cannot see around the bend due to the raised shoreline, but you would be able to pick up the AIS signal on your chartplotter.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch, MAIB has a report of a mid channel collision between a commercial Ferry and a small sailing vessel which resulted in the sailboat sinking and loss of life. The reports conclusion showed the sailing vessel did not appear on radar and because of the height of the bridge the sailboat was not seen by eye. The recommendation was for better radar reflectors so the sailboat could be seen on the ferries radar and or the use of AIS.

Types of AIS

There are two types of AIS class A or B. Class A is for Commercial shipping and transmits via 2 channels and typically is fully integrated into the ships navigation systems. Class B is for smaller vessels. You can choose to receive only or receive and transmit.

The Class B is nearly identical to the Class A, except the Class B: Has a reporting rate less than a Class A (e.g. every 30 sec. when under 14 knots, as opposed to every 10 sec. for Class A) Class B also does not transmit the vessels IMO number or call sign.

AIS signals are sent out over two VHF channels alternating between the two. Some receiver will pick up both channels and some are single. Single channels miss some information and less often.

Note; in the US the FCC has not yet sanctioned calls B transmitters but is coming soon, probably in the New Year 2008.

AIS and the necessary equipment

To get this signal and make use of it, you will need an AIS engine, a VHF antenna, a GPS signal, power and a display. You can use your existing VHF antenna but will loose some signal strength so it is best to get a dedicated antenna for AIS.

The AIS engine translates the AIS signal before it goes to the display. There are many AIS engines available on the market. Equipment that can show the AIS signal includes, any PC and Mac based navigation system. Most of all chartplotters later models from most manufacturers. These include, Garmin, Furuno, Si-Tex, Standard Horizon, Northstar, Raymarine, and many more. Standalone AIS displays are also available.

You can add a compass if you want to send your rate of turn, which can let another vessel project where you will end up after your maneuver.

You will need to register your MMSI number into the unit so it can be part of your signal. Someone receiving the signal either another vessel or a Coast Guard shore station VTS can see your signal and be able to call you by name and call sign.

How much will this Cost

AIS is not new but it is new to the recreational boater. We are in the 3rd generation of AIS and costs are now under 1,000. This makes AIS affordable for the cruiser. For example take a Furuno class A unit the FA150 which costs $4,000-4500. Compare this to the Furuno AIS receiver FA30 for under $740.

Class A or Class B

My discussions with the Pilots concluded that while they like the system and believe it should be on many recreational vessels, they worry about too many signals in crowded channels. They would have to deal with lots of targets on their plotters which could be confusing. They generally agree that they would filter out much of the class B traffic in crowded shipping lanes but turn it on in open water. So pay attention it's your responsibility.

Due to the Difference between Class A and Class B transmission rates, it would be useless for fast moving craft like high speed ferries. You will get a ping only twice a minute. At 20 knots the high speed ferry has moved quite a distance and in restricted visibility this could be too late. In this case Class A is for you.

There's several things that you need to consider when buying a biometric fingerprint door lock for safety.

  1. You want to make sure that you get a solid metal door handle that is very rugged and able to take a lot of wear and tear. It is good to go for 100% solid forged metal door handles.
  2. You want to make sure that you have a deadlock that will give you that extra protection.
  3. You will want to also make sure that it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and matches the rest of your decor in your house.

There a number of different types of biometric locks out on the market, but in general you'll find that there are three available types of biometric locks. There is there is the latch, mortise, and deadbolt biometric door locks for sale. Each has its own benefit and its own drawbacks, you just have to look at what you need it for in the situation involved. They vary in how they operate and are installed, but you will find a number of beautiful door lock designs that will fit every door you will ever find.

Some biometric models have remote control access, be sure to look for that if it is something that interests you.

Keep in mind that years ago if you've ever encountered the old-style fingerprint door locks, you would have seen that they are not very effective nor were they very affordable. Today they're both economical and effective.

What I like about it is that I can come up to the door with a handful of groceries and reach out and touch the doorknob without having to put everything down just to reach down in my pocket for a set of keys. It makes life more enjoyable. I never have to worry about losing my keys. My fingerprints are my keys. It is a very convenient choice.

Most biomatric door locks are very easy to install, but if you think your quiet problems and you're not very handy, then you could probably call a local locksmith or carpenter in the area that will be very helpful in getting your space age biometric door lock installed!

Ever wonder how ships know where they are going on the open sea? In the ancient times, it was the stars & compassed that guided the ships in mysterious waters. Today the marine technology is amazing as there is GPS technology that can pinpoint the location of any ship or water vessel out in the wide open ocean. Here are some that are listed on ebay now...
