Over the years, biometric identification system has gone from fingerprints to sophisticated scanning methods. With increasing variety of data, the concept grossly remains the same. To run the system, data is gathered from the person and stored in a database. This data will then be compared upon an entry during verification. If the input exists in the database, the person is identified or identity is verified and in the case that data is ambiguous, entry will be rejected.

Biometric face recognition is a system that can directly identify a person by face. This technology runs by analyzing exclusive features in the face such as the distance between the eyes, nose width, position of the zygomaticus, jaw line, chin, unique shape pattern etc. This system also entails anthropometric measurements of the eyes, nose, mouth, and other facial features for identification. These data collected from the face are combined in a single unit that uniquely identifies each person. The data is captured using video or thermal imaging. The user's identity is confirmed by looking at a screen. As the person's face change with age or plastic surgery modification, facial recognition algorithms measure the relative position of the ears, nose, eyes and other facial features.

Hand geometry is a scheme that captures the physical attributes of a user's hand and fingers. A camera captures a 3D image of the hand and analyzes finger contour image, bifurcations or branches made by edges. It also measures and records the hand’s length, width, thickness, and surface area. This technology is commonly used in access control verification and DTRs.

Fingerprint identification is perhaps the most common type of biometric identification system around. A fingerprint image is captured and stored to the system’s database. At present, fingerprint readers are fitted into memory cards for use in multiple computers and also in mobile phones, and PDAs. It is successfully implemented in the area of actual access control.

Eye recognition is a technique that involves scanning of the retina and the iris of the eye. Retina scan technology maps the capillary pattern in the area and the position of the optical nerve at the back of the eye. A retina scan measures patterns at over 400 points thus, making it a very reliable verification system.

Iris scanning on the other hand analyzes the iris of the eye, which is the colored ring of tissue that surrounding the pupil. This is a highly developed technology with an established track record in a number of applications. Both retinal and iris scans are commonly used in highly confidential military and government facilities.

Voice biometrics, uses the person's voice to verify or identify the person. A microphone on a standard PC with specialized software is required to analyze the unique features of the voice. Mostly used in telephone-based applications, voice verification is easy to use and does not require intensive training. To register an account, the user speaks a given pass phrase into a microphone or telephone handset.

Nowadays, biometric techniques are available in a wide range of variety. Other methods include:

  • Signature Verification
  • Vascular Analysis
  • Nail Identification
  • DNA Patterns
  • Sweat Pore Analysis
  • Ear Recognition
  • Odor Detection
  • Gait Recognition

A very dependable door lock is weighty to one and all. Homeowners and businessmen pay for exorbitant warning systems with the intention of safeguarding themselves, their families and their valuables versus burglary and infringement. Even though there are numerous methods that bid immense fortification, nothing exists devoid of downsides. Alarm bells can be effortlessly disconnected, protected doors wedged wide open with the right tools and security cameras disabled or wrapped to thwart surveillance. Due to these motives, countless people are putting in money for biometric locks ensuring extra security. Biometric equipment allows for telling apart among individuals using certain unique distinctiveness that are impossible to replicate. For the reason that it is impossible to copy these characteristics, biometric technology belongs to the top methods in protecting everything from confidential data to securing your home.

Biometric technology is commonly employed to grant or reject access to certain sites in a building. It works by using the fingerprint to create an image. This image is then stored electronically and is used to recognize the individual during verification. Since there is no two persons that has the same fingerprint algorithmic pattern, this is surely one of the best ways to ascertain that only allowed individuals can gain access to a certain location.

Nowadays, residential, as well as commercial door locks have been developed to cater to each unique security needs. These locks are found to offer greater security compared to any other locking and security methods. Unlike scan cards which can easily be duplicated and pin codes that can be compromised in some instances, biometric fingerprint technology is virtually impossible to tamper. For this main reason, biometric door locks are preferred more compared to other locking and security systems

A biometric door lock is the best option for those who are looking for are a reliable locking system to secure themselves and their property.

Biometric fingerprint scanners are devices that use a scanner to take the fingerprint of an individual and compare it to a database before displaying the result directly on the unit or through another computer monitor. While not so long ago scanners were very bulky, nowadays they are so much smaller to be fitted into a mouse, keyboard, and even laptops. Because fingerprints are individually distinctive to anyone on earth not excluding twins, fingerprint scanners can be used not only as a means of security and allowing access to exclusively recognized people but also in tracing their movements as well as recording exactly when such authentication happened.

The scanner contains a sensor that scans each finger before sending that image for enrollment into or for
comparison to the unit’s database. Each human finger consists of ridges and bifurcations that create a pattern unique to that individual. Meaning, there’s a very slim chance for any error. What began as simple means of identification or allowing entry into restricted areas has now been converted into tracking a person's location in an office or factory and linking it to payroll software before paying salaries to employees.

Many businesses have placed biometric fingerprint scanners at entry and exits even in restricted areas. This enables them to time the exact entry and exit of each employee without chances of cheating which was previously doable with simple ID bar codes. These scanners can be linked directly to payroll software, exactly computing salaries handed out during payday. Inter-department employee movements can also be traced by installing the same scanners at strategic locations within the company facility.

Some organizations also use dual authentication system, which includes one additional authentication method other than fingerprint scanning to ensure a sterner security and dependability. Iris scanners are sometimes added and linked to an existing fingerprint scanner to fortify authorization filters. Using this technique, access will only be granted if both scans recognize the user consecutively with limited follow-up time or simultaneously, depending on the company’s specifications.

With increasing number of companies offering an assortment of models to satisfy the security and business needs of organizations, time has come to take advantage of the potentials of this technology. Biometric fingerprint scanner is starting to become a need at entry points, especially with the constant threat of terrorism looming around and also for commercial purposes wherein small businesses are find relief in countless ways.

Facial recognition is one of the recent innovations in biometric readers. This technology has gone from simple geometric pattern cross-matching to complete facial analysis. Facial recognition is widely used in passports, locating individuals, identification and other areas of law enforcement. Biometric facial scanners are capable of triple mathematical processing. However, its level of accuracy still remains subject for further research.

Palm and fingerprint biometric readers work in a similar method although palm recognition sells out in a rather slower rate compared to the fingerprint variety. Palm recognition mimics fingerprint scanning by measuring the pattern, ridge endings and bifurcations of the raised portion of the print. Similar to a fingerprint, a palm print pattern is inimitable and the mathematical formulae can easily be stored in a large database. These biometric readers serve their purpose well for law enforcing units around the world specifically in the field of forensics and identification.

Speaker recognition biometric readers are used to recognize the user’s voice. Speaker recognition and speech recognition are commonly interchanged when in fact, they are two different techniques. Speaker recognition analyzes the anatomy of an individual's vocal tract and their characteristics. Speech recognition on the other hand recognizes predetermined words that the user speaks. Speaker recognition can identify the user while voice scanning can not. There are two major disadvantages in the speaker recognition technology though. First is that it is dependent on a scripted text. Secondly, it can be fooled by a recording of the voice or fail to recognize the person if one has colds or suffers from a throat condition. Further research is currently being done to eliminate these two factors.

More recent biometric scanners reading the iris and the retinal vascular markings are seldom found in middle class private industries. These are usually fitted into research facilities wherein research results need to remain confidential and a heightened security level is needed to protect it. Both of these techniques are highly reliable and accurate that the security level they provide is nearly impossible to duplicate.

Visualize yourself safeguarding the access to your entire valuable assets in life by means of electronic identification systems. Few years back, this idea isn’t feasible enough to provide such effective security. Yet at this point, it is very much achievable using biometric fingerprint readers. You won’t have to painstakingly remember password combinations or PIN codes any longer. With biometric fingerprint readers, accessing your valuables is literally on the tip of your fingers.

Keeping your important personal effects inaccessible to other people is a very challenging task. Sometimes you hide it too well that even you yourself can’t find it anymore. How frustrating it will be if you try to remember access codes or PIN codes and turn out not remembering a single thing. In the same sense, using keys are just as impractical for this job. Anyone can just steal the key from you or have it duplicated and use it to open your safe. With fingerprint readers, you don’t have to remember any password; you don’t have to exploit your potted plants or the front door rug to hide keys. The sole access stays with you at all times even when you are completely naked.

Biometric fingerprint systems have significantly transformed our ways of safekeeping valuable items. Such innovations lead to the development of biometric finger print door locks, private elevator access in condominiums, exclusive data storage access, biometric access home safes, even cellular phone access. With this wide variety of applications, you won’t be surprised that one of these days, you’ll be seeing this technology on every possible locations and contraptions.

The concept behind is very simple. The reader contains a sensor which stores the pattern of the finger print inside the computer on enrollment. On verification, the individual touches the device, and then with the help of the matching algorithms, it cross-matches the print entered with the stored image in the computer database. When matched successfully, access will be granted whilst otherwise, rejected.

As basic as its idea, installation is also as simple. The biometric fingerprint package contains a fingerprint scanner and a computer. The computer serves as the electronic storage for the data that will be entered through the fingerprint scanner.

What are its advantages? Benefits are endless but knowing it in detail will help you in choosing the best unit for you.

1. It does not require additional hardware other than the original fingerprint device;
2. Less maintenance cost;
3. It saves time;
4. Reliable security system;
5. It can be portable.

Parading these advantages, biometric fingerprint readers are a sure way of keeping your personal valuables exclusive to yourself. With that I can say that biometric fingerprint systems are the best solution to access control in settings not limited to just personal purposes.

Biometric technology is gaining popularity and readily available for patronage. In fact, it has been already employed even by smaller industries. It could also be found not just from medium to high security establishments but also in every day usage. Yes, every day! The most common of these are hand and fingerprint biometric recognition gadgets.

Fingerprint recognition runs on an identical degree as with hand recognition, but with some differences of course. Fingerprint Recognition obviously uses a finger instead of the whole hand that’s why it is called such! A camera captures an image of the fingerprint and a verification template is created and stored in the database and that data will be compared to the template at the time of verification of a person. Modern fingerprint scanning technology can read to a very accurate level that the fingerprint can be scanned at any time: whether the finger is unclean, wet, cut or even bruised.

The reason behind this is that the scanner can capture the fingerprint image deeper than the superficial layers, making it suitable for industries such as catering or construction companies. However, the ability to scan fingerprints on a portable basis makes fingerprint scanning especially practical for certain purposes. Some UK and US police authorities have already make use of handheld mobile fingerprint scanning devices to identify people on the spot where ever they are in the country, provided that the subject has previously been registered.

Biometric ID techniques have been developed in order to distinguish and verify a user within seconds. Majority of what people think about biometrics is measured from having been able to use existing technology such as the likes found on laptops, external USBs or biometric passport.
