Class A AIS transmits the ship’s Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number together with other identities and vital information regarding the vessel. Specific navigational data are transmitted every two to 10 seconds when cruising, and every three minutes when anchored.

The preliminary transmission includes the vessel’s navigational standing, rate of turn expressed in degrees per minute, speed over ground in 1/10 resolution, latitude and longitude to 1/10,000 minute, course over ground within 1/10 degree, true heading, and the time the data was produced.

A second a data is also transmitted every after six minutes containing the craft’s name, MMSI number (a nine digit number bearing the ship station, earth station, coast station, coast earth station, and group calls), IMO number (a distinctive reference number associated with the ship’s construction), and radio call sign, together with information particular to the vessel’s physical features like dimensions and draft. It also relays ship’s type, its cargo, destination, and estimated arrival (month, day, hour and minute).

Biometric fingerprint scanners are devices that use a scanner to take the fingerprint of an individual and compare it to a database before displaying the result directly on the unit or through another computer monitor. While not so long ago scanners were very bulky, nowadays they are so much smaller to be fitted into a mouse, keyboard, and even laptops. Because fingerprints are individually distinctive to anyone on earth not excluding twins, fingerprint scanners can be used not only as a means of security and allowing access to exclusively recognized people but also in tracing their movements as well as recording exactly when such authentication happened.

The scanner contains a sensor that scans each finger before sending that image for enrollment into or for
comparison to the unit’s database. Each human finger consists of ridges and bifurcations that create a pattern unique to that individual. Meaning, there’s a very slim chance for any error. What began as simple means of identification or allowing entry into restricted areas has now been converted into tracking a person's location in an office or factory and linking it to payroll software before paying salaries to employees.

Many businesses have placed biometric fingerprint scanners at entry and exits even in restricted areas. This enables them to time the exact entry and exit of each employee without chances of cheating which was previously doable with simple ID bar codes. These scanners can be linked directly to payroll software, exactly computing salaries handed out during payday. Inter-department employee movements can also be traced by installing the same scanners at strategic locations within the company facility.

Some organizations also use dual authentication system, which includes one additional authentication method other than fingerprint scanning to ensure a sterner security and dependability. Iris scanners are sometimes added and linked to an existing fingerprint scanner to fortify authorization filters. Using this technique, access will only be granted if both scans recognize the user consecutively with limited follow-up time or simultaneously, depending on the company’s specifications.

Facial recognition is one of the recent innovations in biometric readers. This technology has gone from simple geometric pattern cross-matching to complete facial analysis. Facial recognition is widely used in passports, locating individuals, identification and other areas of law enforcement. Biometric facial scanners are capable of triple mathematical processing. However, its level of accuracy still remains subject for further research.

Palm and fingerprint biometric readers work in a similar method although palm recognition sells out in a rather slower rate compared to the fingerprint variety. Palm recognition mimics fingerprint scanning by measuring the pattern, ridge endings and bifurcations of the raised portion of the print. Similar to a fingerprint, a palm print pattern is inimitable and the mathematical formulae can easily be stored in a large database. These biometric readers serve their purpose well for law enforcing units around the world specifically in the field of forensics and identification.

Speaker recognition biometric readers are used to recognize the user’s voice. Speaker recognition and speech recognition are commonly interchanged when in fact, they are two different techniques. Speaker recognition analyzes the anatomy of an individual's vocal tract and their characteristics. Speech recognition on the other hand recognizes predetermined words that the user speaks. Speaker recognition can identify the user while voice scanning can not. There are two major disadvantages in the speaker recognition technology though. First is that it is dependent on a scripted text. Secondly, it can be fooled by a recording of the voice or fail to recognize the person if one has colds or suffers from a throat condition. Further research is currently being done to eliminate these two factors.

More recent biometric scanners reading the iris and the retinal vascular markings are seldom found in middle class private industries. These are usually fitted into research facilities wherein research results need to remain confidential and a heightened security level is needed to protect it. Both of these techniques are highly reliable and accurate that the security level they provide is nearly impossible to duplicate.
