RFID has been around for decades and it has never stopped widening its scope ever since. Radio Frequency Identification or RFID is a system comprised of multiple components. Such components are microchip transponders, readers, and software that initiates a steady data feed.

An internal circuit (IC) and antenna are fitted into every RFID transponder. The IC is then embedded with a distinctive electronic product code (EPC) making it unique among other tagged items worldwide. When the tag moves within reading range of an RFID reader, data pertaining to the item is transmitted via the antenna to the scanner, furnishing information to a processing unit.
RFID technique was originally used for military purposes in WWII. Since then, it has been employed in various fields. It became a very useful tool in automotive, security, packaged food, travel, as well as trade businesses.
Even though it is coined as āwireless bar codingā, RFID is far better than bar codes. Using it, scanning can be accomplished irrespective of whether the item is in the readerās line of sight or not. Another feature it boasts of is its capability of scanning items as far as 90 feet away.
RFID is a very independent identification system. This identification system runs devoid of human involvement. Moreover, it is capable of scanning multiple IDs simultaneously and supply pinpoint accuracy in identifying each item.
Normally, RFID systems are classified in two ways. The first classification is based on storage and retrieval capabilities: Read-only or Read-write and Passive or Active power sources. The second classification is determined by the frequency itās employing: Low Frequency, High Frequency, or Ultra-high Frequency.
Read-only labels can only retrieve stored data. Such data can be an item description or a product number. These systems can capably simplify important fabrication and supply chain procedures. Read-write tags on the other hand are designed with both read and write ability.
In a passive system, an RFID reader produces an energy field that triggers activation and gives power to a tag. Without a reader within range, the ID could not provide any information. A passive system is not so great and is somewhat less dependable than an active system.
An active system has batteries implanted in tags to power transmission of data between tag and reader. Active systems are more refined than passive systems and offer longer read ranges. They have other features such as temperature sensing and a longer operating life.
